Do I need permission from my parents to see someone from student wellbeing?
No you don’t need permission. We do encourage parents are aware but if you don’t want them to know that’s your choice.
Why are other people luckier than me?
Don’t rely on luck. More often than not, when people appear lucky, they are just working hard to make sure things happen.
You may often look at really successful people and think they are so lucky. It seems like good things are always happening for them or to them. But what you don’t realise is they are making their own luck.
How do they do that?
You need to have a plan and work towards that plan.
Hard work will get you where you want to go.
Often the harder you work, the more successful you will be and the ‘luckier’ you will appear.
I'm worried about my friend, they don't seem 'themselves' at the moment. What can I do to help?
Ask them 'are you okay?' Tell them you are worried about them and encourage them to seek support. Offer to come with them the first time if they are anxious about talking to someone, even if it is just to tell their parents or another trusted adult what is wrong. Ask them if there is something they need that you can help them with. Be prepared to make a tough call if you think your friend's safety is at risk, and seek help for them without their consent. Good friends care enough to step up!
I’ve seen a counsellor before and it didn’t help, why should I try again?
Because every counsellor or wellbeing staff is different, they have different personality and approaches and it may be that you need to speak to a few before you find the right person for you!
If I see a counselor will you tell my parents?
Counselling is confidential unless we are concerned that you are at harm to yourself or others then our role is to keep you safe.
How do I improve my motivation?
A lot of students say that there are times where they struggle to find motivation and they ask us what they can do to help that.
The advice we give them is to have goals.
Goals = motivation
If your mood and motivation is really low, then you can probably only manage having one goal a day that you can work towards achieving and ticking off.
It is important to have a big goal that you’re working towards.
Then you have smaller, more achievable goals that you need to do along the way in order to keep moving forward towards that bigger goal.
Another way of improving your motivation is to have a Vision Board. Every successful, high achieving presenter that we have had come to MWSC to speak to our students have all spoken about their Vision Board. So it is clearly a worthwhile thing to have.
It can be in the form of a poster that you blu tack in a prominent part of your room so whenever you look at it you are motivated to keep working hard to achieve the smaller goals on your way to achieving the big goal, the ultimate dream. Picture yourself in your dream. Photoshop an image of yourself actually doing whatever your dream is. Put that on your Vision Board and let that be the motivation you need to create the smaller goals to get you there.
I’m worried my friends will find out and make fun of me if I go to student wellbeing!
Appointments can be discreet and you don’t have to tell you friends. However everybody has the right to look after their own wellbeing so don’t be ashamed.
I’ve been feeling really anxious lately and having panic attacks what can I do?
Have you tried breathing exercises to help bring you back to the moment?? This is really important when you feel a panic attack coming on.
You should also talk to someone about it, whether that’s your parents/carers, friend or student wellbeing.
I don’t understand something in my class but I’m too scared to ask the teacher.
Send them an email and ask for help but let them know you don't want to talk about it in class or you can contact your year level coordinator who can help you talk to your teacher.
Do I need a Medicare card to see a doctor?
If you are 15 years or older and registered with Medicare you do not need the card to make an appointment. If you know the number that can be helpful or the Doctors office is able to search up your number with proof of identity.
