"Kindness Matters"

A Message From Middle School Principal Christopher Berger

Happy October, Crusader families!

Thank you to those that recently attended our Open House evenings. If you were unable to attend and have any questions regarding your child’s program or course curriculum, please contact your child’s teacher or guidance counselor.

Today, October 6, is the mid-point for the first quarter, which means a first quarter progress report will be available in Parent Portal in the upcoming weeks.  The first quarter ends on Thursday, November 9, 2023.

We have a couple of spots remaining for families that would like to take advantage of our Strengthening Families program that is being offered at the Middle School through the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Orange County. There are six weeks remaining in the program, but you must sign up before Wednesday, October 11, to participate. More information including how to sign up for the program can be found in this flyer: Strengthening Families Flyer

We’re looking forward to some themed events this month! There will be more information to follow regarding Red Ribbon Week that will take place during the week of October 23, and our Halloween themed Rec Night on October 27!

As always, thank you for your continued support and partnership. We appreciate the integral role you play in your child’s education.

Best wishes,

Christopher Berger

MWMS Principal

Red Ribbon Week-October, 23rd-31st

Students are getting ready for Red Ribbon Week® 2023 – this year’s theme is:

Be Kind To Your Mind. Live Drug Free.

At school, students will engage in activities that promote a drug free and healthy lifestyle. Please partner with us and discuss this message at home, at the dinner table, at family outings, and with friends and extended family.

What Is Red Ribbon Week?

It is an ideal way for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs. Show your personal commitment to a drug-free lifestyle through the symbol of the Red Ribbon, October 23 - 31st. The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign® is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a drug-free America.

Did You Know?

Children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don’t; yet, only a quarter of teens report having these conversations.  Red Ribbon Week® (October 23-31), the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the nation, is your opportunity to get the ongoing conversation started.  Visit www.redribbon.org to learn more about Red Ribbon Week® and get tips for talking to your kids about drugs.  The life you save may be that of your own child or a dear friend.

NEWS AND NOTES

Library Corner

The middle school library’s book club is well underway with participants reading The Attack of the Black Rectangles by A.S. King. Students are enjoying getting to know the main character, 12 year-old Mac and his friends' experience in navigating life and school in a “perfect” town where things are not so perfect after-all.  Mac has already introduced to the students the theme of what it means to have grace when facing difficult people and situations. This is the first of four books the club will read.

Art Department

8th grade art students have been studying color and value.  They had to create a composition containing objects from nature to include in their "faux stained glass window drawing."  They studied color families and learned how to blend and layer oil pastels.
