"Kindness Matters"

A Message From Middle School Principal Christopher Berger

Greetings MWMS Families!

We hope that you had an enjoyable and restful spring break!

The students did an excellent job this week completing their NYS ELA assessments. As a reminder, students in grades 6-8 will be taking the NYS Math assessments on May 7 & May 8. In addition, our 8th grade students will take the NYS Science assessment on May 14.

The building is abuzz with many exciting activities and events taking place in the upcoming weeks. Spring athletics are in full swing, after school clubs continue to meet, and students are preparing for their upcoming spring concerts.

Speaking of athletes, our Special Oympians are getting ready to compete in West Point on Saturday, April 20. Opening Ceremonies start at 10:00 a.m. Best of luck to our MWMS athletes!

MWMS Student Council will be holding its first ever Silent Disco event on Friday, April 19, 2024. Students will be given headphones to listen to and choose from three different stations of music. The stations can be changed by the students at any time throughout the event. Students will enjoy the night dancing and hanging out with their friends while two DJs supply the music. Registration is required and the cost is $12. Sign up today by Clicking Here!

Last but not least, each grade level will be attending one field trip this spring. Our 6th graders will be the first grade level to attend their trip. They will be going to watch the Hudson Valley Renegades play on April 24. The day will be filled with hands-on STEAM activities and minor league baseball!

As always, thank you for your continued support and partnership. We appreciate the integral role you play in your child’s education.

Best wishes,

Christopher Berger

STAFF Spotlight

Mrs. Laura Lerner

Mrs. Lerner was a teacher in NYC for 2 years and then a teacher at Washingtonville High School before coming to Monroe-Woodbury School District as the middle school librarian in 2008.

Mrs. Lerner has a newly-married daughter, and a son who is a senior at SUNY Cortland. She loves to travel, and spends as much time as she can gardening.

Unfortunately she is retiring at the end of the school year, but her legacy as the District Coordinator for Library Services will continue to be felt at Monroe-Woodbury for years! After her retirement, she plans to be a NICU volunteer.

Mrs. Lerner is grateful to have had the opportunity to work with an amazing middle school family. We will miss her, but we wish her well!

NEWS AND NOTES

CAREER FAIR

The middle school held their 2nd Annual Career Fair on March 12th, and it was a huge success! Eighth grade students attended the fair and were able to speak with a variety of professionals from approximately 20 different vocations. Students had an opportunity to learn about the careers and ask specific questions that they had previously prepared for the vendors. This is an event that we look forward to continuing in the future!

Food Drive

National Junior Honor Society and Student Council are sponsoring a food drive! Items will be donated to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley in Cornwall-on-Hudson.

This is a completely student-organized event with a prize, so keep those donations coming!

Library Corner

The Library, in coordination with the Social Studies department , recently hosted the annual Resilience Week exhibit from the Rockland Holocaust museum featuring the traveling exhibit “Resilience”.

musical notes

179 MWMS students are performing at this weekend's NYSSMA Solo festival (April 12-13). Students have spent months preparing sales, rudiments, and solos to perform in front of a state adjudicator.  And, the May concert season is right around the corner!

Art Department

Mrs. Angeloro's 8th grade students worked on their endangered animal research posters. Check them out; they're hanging around in the hallway!
