"Kindness Matters"

A Message From Middle School Principal Christopher Berger

Hello Crusaders!

We have made it to the third quarter and Punxsutawney Phil has spoken: an early spring awaits us! Hopefully we will see some sunshine soon!

Second quarter report cards will be viewable to parents by the end of next week. As a reminder, the district sends home a chronic absenteeism letter after each quarter for students that have been absent more than 10% of the school year (NYS definition of chronic absenteeism). The purpose is to make parents aware of the student's absences and to make sure our records are accurate. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions if your child receives this letter. We encourage parents to continuously monitor your child's attendance through Parent Portal.

We are looking forward to World Read Aloud Day on February 7th, 2024. To celebrate, the 8th grade students will attend an assembly by author A.S. King on the topic: "How to write a good life." It should be a great experience! Additionally, our 8th graders will be starting the process of selecting their academic courses for 9th grade. As the first step in this process, our 8th graders will be visiting the High School by house color, starting on February 12, 2024. A parent orientation will be held at the high school for our current 8th grade parents & guardians on February 27, 2024 @ 6:00 p.m. More information will be sent to 8th grade parents in the upcoming days.

Please note that Thursday, February 8, 2024 will be a half-day for students. Middle School buses will depart at approximately 11:40 a.m. In addition, all Monroe-Woodbury schools will be closed from February 19 through February 23 for winter recess. We hope our students use this time to relax and unwind while enjoying themselves with friends and family.

Best wishes,

Christopher Berger

NEWS AND NOTES

national junior honor society

Last month, 87 NJHS students and 8 chaperones from the middle school attended the LEAD conference in Washington, DC.  Students attended a leadership conference where they were provided opportunities for peer learning, expertise-sharing, and networking with some of the most incredible student leaders across the globe.  They came back with resources, skills, and inspiration to make an even greater impact on their school, community, and beyond.  During the trip, the group also toured the US Capitol, visited the Smithsonian Museum of American History and took a night walking tour of the DC monuments and memorials.  Thank you to all the chaperones who gave up their weekend to make this trip happen for our fantastic students!

musical notes

Hundreds of our band and orchestra students will be participating in the annual Kaleidoscope Concert in the MS gymnasium on February 14th, followed by a reception in the cafeteria with entertainment provided by the Jazz Band.

crusader council

Crusader Council hosted its annual "Cookies and Cocoa" event last month. Students gathered in the cafeteria to enjoy hot chocolate while they decorated delicious cookies. It was a great success as always!
