December 2022: Wonderland Maker Workshop

Welcome to the Miscoe Hill Winter Wonderland 3D Design & Printing workshop. You will have the option of taking one of four challenges (including a build-your-own challenge) to design or remix an existing 3D object and begin the printing process before you leave the workshop. This workshop is designed to be collaborative and iterative we encourage designers to take their time and solicit feedback on their creation before sending it to the printer.

The challenges, as well as instructions for 3D design & printing, can be found below. Feel free to ask for help from Dr. Quinn, Mr. O'Neal, or any of the other participants. Remember: Everyone learns from everyone!

Challenges:

  1. Design a gift for a friend or a loved one. Be able to articulate why you've designed what you've designed and the meaning behind the gift.

  2. Design a personalized keychain

  3. Design a seasonal decorative ornament

  4. Create something of your own choosing!

Design Process Part I

  1. Open Tinkercad and log in using Google and your MURSD credentials.

  2. Option A: We know what We want to Make

    1. On the right-hand menu, click, Classes and then Inspired Innovation Center Family Workshop.

    2. Select the Activity

    3. If you'd like to make an original design, you can click the "Create new design" button.

    4. If you'd like to look for inspiration, use the magnifying glass to search for different items that might be useful to replicate or remix.

  3. Option B: We need some

  4. Get to work.

Design Process Part II

  1. When you're happy with your work, find another workshop participant (or two or three) and ask them to give you some advice on your design.

  2. Advice should take the form of:

    1. I like: Tell the designer what you enjoy about the design or what's pleasing or useful

    2. I wish: Share a potential change to the design that would improve the appeal, functionality or quality of the end product.

    3. What if: Share a change or idea to reshape the design that the designer might not have considered. These can be outside-of-the-box suggestions.

  3. Reflection on the feedback and decide which adjustments you'd like to make and which ones to discard. This is also a time for new ideas to sprout as well.

  4. Make your revisions and head to Design Process Part III.

Design Process Part III

Share Your Design

Click the little person button (seen above) to create a link to your design and email it to Dr. Quinn. We will print your designs to display in the IIC.

Export Your Design

Click on the Export button and select the STL option. STL is the file type that can be "sliced" and converted into a printable object.

Upload Your Design to the Print Controler

Visit 3DprinterOS and ask Dr. Quinn or Mr. O'Neal for the login credentials. Once logged in, tap the "Add file" option and upload your file. Please name or rename the file with your own name so we know who is printing it.

Design Process Part IV

Mr. O'Neal or Dr. Quinn will walk you through the slicing and printing process. In order to accommodate everyone's designs, we may need to adjust the size of your item.
