Multistep Multimodal Assignments
Multistep Multimodal Assignment for ESL Students
Here is a project I designed for my higher level ESL reading and writing students that incorporated a number of smaller assignments into a larger multimodal presentation. The results pleased me, though I inevitably learned a new thing: a very specific timetable with due dates for each element of the project is needed! Without such timetable, the project's pace lagged a bit, as I was perhaps overly flexible on the due dates set along the way; indeed, I desired the freedom to give students the time needed to get the work done on this first go-around. Next time, there will be a schedule attached to this baby!
The article "Multimodal Resemiotization and Authorial Agency in an L2 Writing Classroom," By Tony Cimasko and Dong-shin Shin informed this more scaffolded approach the assignment design .
Here is a finished product of the above assignment "Project #1: American Values through Music" by two hard-working students, both of whom were in their first year at a U.S. institution of higher education. As you'll notice, some obvious errors with grammar, formatting, and source use/alignment remain, though they do not diminish meaningful and effective communication. Thank you to both Sushil & Gezahagn for their permission to share their project with you.
