Connecting ESL Teachers with English Language Learners Around the World: Remotely
The rapid transition from the classroom to remote learning in March 2020 caused havoc in educational contexts around the world. One of the student populations that suffered the most negative effects from the shift were English language learners (ELLs). The negative consequences of the shift on postsecondary ELLs are still being studied: interruptions in placement assessment, limited access and familiarity with learning technology, and the sudden pause of social interactions (which is critical to language development) stifled many ELLs' language and academic progress.
Although a majority of students and teachers are now back in the classroom, some have chosen to stick with remote teaching and learning. If you are still skeptical about the effectiveness of remote English language learning, I'm here to tell you that it can be just as effective-and fun!-as in-person learning! With support from Professional English as a Second Language (ESL) Tutors, ELLs who are learning online have a much higher likelihood of success. Additionally, ELLs who engage in service-learning can benefit greatly, in terms not only of language improvement but also in their cultural and civic competencies. And finally, WebQuests are fun and engaging activities that help students to practice research skills, learn new information, and collaborate with their classmates, all while also improving their language skills.
