Announcing New Math Unit: Measurement At Home!
We will be trying out a new weekly Math Schedule (see image below) as we jump into a big unit on measurement for the next month while we are learning from home.
**This is optional - you may choose to keep playing dice games and doing the hands-on project extensions at the bottom of this page instead. We will also be sharing Splashmath (online learning app) log-ins with you this week.**
To streamline this project:
Every week, we will upload worksheets/activities for this unit. They are all labeled with specific dates and linked in the big Assignment document below and on this page. You can skip days or move them around so that it works for you.
You can watch our pre-recorded videos introducing new math content and Brainpop video links each Tuesday and Thursday, or you can just use the worksheets and activities by themselves.
We are trying to provide new content for those that want it, and also really don’t want this to be stressful. We hope that measurement is a fun hands-on topic.
*We will continue using our Kindergarten Math Padlet so that we can share math work with each other. Instructions for access are copied below.
Introduction to Measurement
Measure It! Activity Overview & Modeling
Can be printed or hand-drawn
Padlets are like virtual bulletin boards. We will use Padlet to share out student work in the coming weeks. You can upload photos, videos, and blurbs about your engineering projects. Each engineering project will have its own padlet, and many of your other classes will have their own padlets.
To add to a padlet:
Click on the link for that specific project OR Click on the little "POP OUT" window on the upper right of the padlet image for that project
Once padlet opens, click on the PINK PLUS sign in the lower right hand corner and add your comment. Please put your NAME as the title so we can see who is posting. You can add photos/video links and more.
Read other people's posts and add comments if you want!
Draw a ten frame and a number line. Write out each letter of your name on a small post-it note and then count the letters in your name. Show your work on the number line and ten frame!
Then, do the same for all the members of your family and create a graph comparing the letters in their names. See picture above for an example!
Gather fruit loops, another colored cereal, colored beads, or other small colorful things.
Draw a drawing base, like this rainbow to the upper left.
Sort your items into color groups and the count the items in each group.
Use your colorful items to create a 3D picture, like the one to the lower left.
In this longer project, you will explore measurement. Once you follow the link to the Scholastic Online Remote Learning Resources, you will 1) Watch a read-aloud, 2) Read a book yourself, 3) Watch a video about bunnies, and 4) Measure your own "hops"!
This will launch a separate tab that will allow you to complete the next two steps of this activity.
You can also explore the puzzles and "dive deeper" components on the left side!
Click on "Read the book" on the left side of your screen and practice reading "Rabbits" yourself. You can click the little arrow on the right to go page by page.
Use the directions to the left to complete a movement and measurement activity. Using painter's tape or masking tape, tape off different measurement challenges around the house and then enjoy jumping around. Measure how many jumps each challenge takes! Post photos on our Padlet!
