Announcing New Math Unit: Measurement At Home!
We will be trying out a new weekly Math Schedule (see image below) and jump into a big unit on measurement for the next month while we are learning from home.
**This is optional - you may choose to keep using your Workbook and to keep using Sumdog and Splashmath learning apps daily for 40 minutes if that is easier for you and your family.**
We have scanned worksheets/activities for the whole week. They are all labeled with specific dates and linked in the big Assignment document below and on this page. You can skip days or move them around so that it works for you.
You can watch our pre-recorded videos introducing new math content and Brainpop video links each Tuesday and Thursday, or you can just use the worksheets and activities by themselves.
We are trying to provide new content for those that want it, and also really don’t want this to be stressful. We hope that measurement is a fun hands-on topic.
*We will continue using our Math Padlet so that we can share math work with each other. Instructions for access are copied below.
*Number talks with also continue to be posted daily!

*To add your idea, click on the pink circle with the + sign.
Then, add the Number Talk Title. Ex: "Work it out Wednesday" and Your Name.
***You can use these great LEARNING CENTER MATH TOOLS to help show your strategy. Here's some of our favorites:
To add to our 1st Grade Math Padlet, you can:
Click on the little "POP OUT" window on the upper right of the padlet image below
Click on the PINK PLUS sign in the lower right hand corner and add your comment. Please put your NAME as the title so we can see who is posting. You can add photos/video links and more.
Read other people's posts and add comments if you want!
Draw a ten frame and a number line. Write out each letter of your name on a small post-it note and then count the letters in your name. Show your work on the number line and ten frame!
Then, do the same for all the members of your family and create a graph comparing the letters in their names. See picture above for an example!
Gather fruit loops, another colored cereal, colored beads, or other small colorful things.
Draw a drawing base, like this rainbow to the upper left.
Sort your items into color groups and the count the items in each group.
Create a chart or graph to represent your data.
Use your colorful items to create a 3D picture, like the one to the lower left.
In this longer project, you will explore measurement. Once you follow the link to the Scholastic Online Remote Learning Resources, you will 1) Watch a read-aloud, 2) Read a book yourself, 3) Watch a video about science tools and measurement, and 4) Measure things around your house!
This will launch a separate window for the next parts of this activity.
You can also explore the puzzles and "dive deeper" components on the left side!
Click on "Read the book" on the left side of your screen and practice reading "How Long Is it" yourself. You can click the little arrow on the right to go page by page.
Follow this link and watch a video about science tools and measurement.
Use nonstandard units (so not a ruler or tape measure) to measure things around your house. Use spoons, books, shoes, etc!
