My goal is to:
Build an effective and professional relationship with my MT where mutual trust, respect, and support is encouraged.
I will meet this goal by:
Showing her respect as I learn from her while demonstrating my independence and pulling my weight. By establishing my classroom presence while still allowing myself to learn from my MT, I can take this opportunity to explore team teaching and become more comfortable with collaboration.
During this practicum, I learned a great deal about balancing independence and collaboration in teaching. Initially, I began by emulating my mentor teacher's teaching style, routines, and habits. Gradually, I transitioned to team teaching and leading short individual lessons, incorporating my own call-and-response techniques and establishing my unique teacher presence. By the end of the practicum, while I continued to apply feedback from my mentor teacher, I had gained significant independence, confidently teaching full days with lessons I created as my confidence grew.
My goal is to:
Build effective relationships with the school Educational Assistants (EAs) and learn about their approaches when dealing with difficult behaviour.
I will meet this goal by:
Observing and talking to the school EAs about how they create and maintain boundaries and strategies to protect themselves physically and emotionally in difficult situations.
The EAs in my field school work as a team. They consistently have meetings with one another and other staff members to stay on the same page. This helps refresh support plans and ensures everyone is approaching specific students in the same way. The immediate team supports one another by exercising the "30-on-30-off rule." When specific students are having difficult behaviour, the EAs will work 30 minutes with them and switch to take mental and physical breaks. They also have a direct line to admit for extra support as well as incident reports to protect legal matters.
My goal is to:
Create a safe learning environment for the students I tutor in fieldwork this semester.
I will meet this goal by:
I will make a personal connection with this student to foster an enjoyment of reading (TQS 2c, 4d).
In my field school this semester, my student was phenomenal. He has the drive and a will to learn, especially with literacy. His initial interaction with me was asking me to help him sound out a peer's shirt. This revealed his initiative to me. We built a connection starting with the Question Game cards from my LitKit where we had lots of silly laughs but he also took our tutoring sessions very seriously. He likes to ask about my personal life and willingly shares his. However, when it's time to play games, he gets serious. My student tries his absolute best in everything we do and recently told me I am the reason he enjoys reading. This personal connection has allowed me to explore his learning on a deeper level.
My goal is to:
Create and foster respectful relationships with the students.
I will meet this goal by:
Creating a kind, understanding, and patient teacher presence while still maintaining respect from the students.
I connected with students who were shy and quiet, those who were struggling or misunderstood, and those who lacked motivation. This experience helped me recognize that every student is unique, with their own needs. I also learned the importance of establishing authority in the classroom. As a student teacher, I noticed that some students didn’t always take me seriously. However, when I was left in charge with a substitute teacher and two other Teacher Candidates, I realized I had the most familiarity with the students and the class expectations. I took the initiative to calmly guide the students toward their tasks and reinforce the expectations.
My goal is to:
Learn to create professional interactions and relationships with my mentor teacher and other staff at the school in my fieldwork this semester.
I will meet this goal by:
Approaching my conversations with the school staff with respect and as a learner. I intend to enter and observe the staffroom. During this time I can use the opportunity around staff to work on my professional interactions I will also have an open mind towards my mentor teacher and their opinions.
During my fieldwork days, I spent lunch in the staff room, observing how the teachers interacted and what topics they discussed. I noticed that they spoke very positively about their students, often sharing and celebrating their learners’ progress. The staff also demonstrated strong support for one another, collaborating to brainstorm solutions based on their experiences and insights with specific students. Through these observations and my interactions with my mentor teacher, I developed a variety of learning strategies while maintaining an open mind and deep respect for their expertise.
