My goal is to:
Anticipate specific needs and accommodations for all students.
I will meet this goal by:
Building personal relationships with each and every student as well as their learning style to be able to customize each student's learning experience to the best of my abilities. I will alter lessons and activities with the help of my MT based on our understanding and previous knowledge of each student's learning style.
I worked toward creating a classroom environment where students felt safe to be creative by consistently using positive and constructive feedback strategies. I implemented a "two stars and a wish" approach, verbally highlighting two strengths in a student’s work while gently offering one area for improvement. In written feedback, I ensured that every suggestion for improvement was paired with a positive note, focusing on progress and effort. I avoided using red ink or marking answers with X’s, opting instead to circle areas needing attention to maintain a supportive tone. Additionally, I gave students multiple opportunities to meet learning outcomes, whether through verbal reassessment, revising assignments, or incorporating the outcomes into future tasks. This approach fostered a growth mindset, encouraging students to take creative risks while feeling supported and valued.
My goal is to:
Learn how to intertwine the same theme(s) into separate lessons.
I will meet this goal by:
Taking advantage of my three connected lessons this semester. I will make sure the overall understanding and learning objectives are stated and reiterated at the start of each connected lesson.
By using different forms of diagnostic assessment, I could link my lessons to one another and refresh students on previous learnings. I also incorporated a mascot for these health lessons. "Pedro the Pineapple" was used to hook the students and remind them that Pedro needs good sleep, diet, and exercise habits to remain physically healthy. This tool kept the students engaged and guided them through remembering my three connected lessons at the start of each one.
My goal is to:
Foster an encouraging and positive environment for my Read-Aloud lesson plan.
I will meet this goal by:
Utilizing the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to ensure all students feel supported throughout my lesson (TQS 2d).
By using the UDL, I was able to alter my lesson with multiple variations of the activity. All students were able to feel successful and complete their work based on their varied learning levels. My main health objectives chosen for the lesson were able to be reached with each student in their own creative way. The artifact shown is the product of one of the students' work after my read-aloud. This allowed them to express creativity in their choice of word, picture, and sticker.
My goal is to:
Learn how my mentor teacher creates effective lesson hooks to engage students.
I will meet this goal by:
Asking for her advice on my lesson in between classes. After my first class is done, I will apply the advice given and include her advice on hooks.
My goal is to:
Learn and understand my mentor teacher's strategies catering to different learning styles.
I will meet this goal by:
Discussing with my mentor teacher how they simultaneously handle all different learning strategies in a classroom setting. I will discover how these factors affect a lesson plan and the way the classroom is designed. I am hoping to learn the way these decisions can alter learning for a variety of students.
