Workshop: Writing essays for health profession school applications

Sunday, November 7, 2021, 1:00-4:00 p.m. ET

Location TBA

Registration deadline is Sunday, October 24

Registration link below

This is an interactive workshop and is geared towards those who will submit their applications within the next year. It is open to any MHC student or graduate, of any class year, who would like to learn more about preparing essays for applications to health profession schools. Seniors who are not applying for fall 2023 entry are nevertheless encouraged to attend, since you may not be able to attend in a future year.

If you are required to attend this workshop but are unavailable at the time that it will be offered, please do still register. You will have an option to select that you cannot attend.

Homework:

  1. Writing: Note, we are going to ask that you share your writing with us in a Google doc.

a. Brainstorm a list of 3 qualities that describe you, and that you think professional schools should know about you. In other words, these 3 qualities should help to demonstrate your qualifications for the profession you hope to enter.

b. Brainstorm three meaningful events in your life. Consider these questions to help you with the brainstorm: What have been the pivotal points in your life? Looking back, what can you recall having changed you: helped you to learn, grow, explore? How else were you affected by these experiences? Write a brief (max 1500 characters including spaces) paragraph about each of the three events that you come up with.

c. At the end of each paragraph, briefly note whether you think your description of that experience demonstrates any of the 3 qualities that you think professional schools should know about you (it’s ok if they don’t!)

  1. Register for the workshop. Keep your writing handy! At the end of the form you will be asked to share a Google document with your 3 qualities and 3 paragraphs.

  2. Choose one of your paragraphs to print out and share and discuss with a small group (3-4 attendees) during the workshop. Selecting a paragraph now does not commit you to using that writing in your actual personal statement. It is meant to be a starting place for conversation.

Registration: You must register by Sunday, October 24
