Molecular Biology Laboratory

The RSRC Molecular Biology Laboratory provides facilities and technical expertise for molecular and cellular analyses in biological and biomedical research. It supports studies involving nucleic acid extraction, amplification, and basic molecular characterization, serving faculty, students, and research collaborators. Through standardized protocols and trained personnel, the laboratory enables reliable data generation and contributes to high-quality, interdisciplinary research and academic training.

Objectives

To serve as a center of excellence in molecular biology and genomics, advancing high-quality research that addresses scientific, environmental, and developmental priorities in Southern Mindanao.
To provide reliable and accessible basic to advanced molecular biology services and techniques that support instruction, thesis and dissertation work, faculty-led research, and externally funded research projects.
To develop research capacity through structured training, laboratory immersion, and skills-based programs, equipping students, faculty, and researchers with practical competencies in modern molecular and genomic methodologies.

Laboratory Services Offered

DNA Extraction

The DNA Extraction service provides efficient and reliable isolation of high-quality DNA from biological samples for research and academic use. This service ensures the removal of contaminants while preserving DNA integrity, producing samples suitable for downstream molecular applications such as amplification, sequencing, and genetic analysis. It supports a wide range of studies in molecular biology, genetics, and biotechnology.

DNA Purification

The DNA Purification service provides the refinement and cleanup of DNA samples to remove contaminants such as proteins, salts, and residual reagents. This process improves DNA quality and concentration, ensuring suitability for sensitive downstream molecular applications, including PCR, sequencing, and other genetic analyses. It supports accurate, reproducible, and reliable molecular biology research and instructional activities.

DNA Quantification via UV Spectrophotometry

The DNA Quantification via UV Spectrophotometry service provides accurate measurement of DNA concentration and purity using absorbance-based analysis. This service assesses nucleic acid quality by determining DNA yield and evaluating potential contaminants, ensuring that samples meet the required standards for downstream molecular applications such as PCR, sequencing, and cloning.

DNA Amplification via end-point Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)

The DNA Amplification via End-Point PCR service enables the targeted amplification of specific DNA sequences using polymerase chain reaction techniques. This service produces detectable DNA fragments for qualitative analysis, verification of gene presence, and downstream applications such as gel electrophoresis and cloning. It supports research and instructional activities requiring reliable and reproducible DNA amplification.

Real-time Quantification via Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR)

The Real-Time Quantification via RT-PCR service provides sensitive and accurate measurement of DNA targets through real-time amplification and detection. This service enables quantitative analysis of nucleic acids, allowing monitoring of amplification in real time and precise determination of target abundance. It supports research applications requiring high sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility in molecular analysis.

PCR Product Purification

The PCR Product Purification service provides efficient cleanup of amplified DNA products to remove primers, nucleotides, enzymes, and reaction by-products. This process improves the quality and concentration of PCR amplicons, ensuring suitability for downstream applications such as sequencing, cloning, and further molecular analyses.

Gel Electrophoresis

The Gel Electrophoresis service enables the separation and visualization of DNA fragments based on size using an electric field. This service is used to verify PCR amplification, assess fragment integrity, and estimate molecular size, providing clear and reliable results for research and instructional molecular biology applications.
