Histopathology Laboratory

The RSRC Histopathology Laboratory provides specialized facilities and expertise for the preparation, processing, and microscopic evaluation of biological tissues. It supports research and instructional activities involving tissue fixation, sectioning, staining, and histological analysis for biological and biomedical studies. Through standardized procedures and skilled technical support, the laboratory ensures accurate tissue assessment and contributes to high-quality research outputs and academic training.

Objectives

To establish and maintain a modern, fully functional histopathology laboratory capable of delivering high-quality and standardized histopathology services for students, faculty, and researchers in Southern Mindanao.
To provide comprehensive and diversified training and research exposure in histopathology for university students, faculty, and staff, equipping them with essential practical skills and competencies for future engagement in research, community-based practice, and academic careers.
To serve as a center of excellence in histopathology that supports multidisciplinary and collaborative research through histological approaches, fostering high-impact studies and advancing scientific knowledge across diverse research fields.

Laboratory Services Offered

Tissue Gross Examination and Dissection

The Tissue Gross Examination and Dissection service provides careful and standardized handling of tissue specimens for research and academic purposes. It includes the accurate inspection, measurement, trimming, and dissection of samples to ensure proper representation and preservation of tissues for downstream analyses. This service ensures consistency, reliability, and quality in specimen preparation, forming an essential step in producing valid and interpretable histopathological results.

Tissue Processing

The Tissue Processing service provides systematic preparation of tissue specimens for histological analysis. It includes dehydration, clearing, tissue embedding, and tissue sectioning, ensuring proper preservation of tissue structure and cellular integrity. These standardized procedures produce high-quality tissue sections suitable for staining, microscopic examination, and reliable research and instructional use.

Tissue Fixation

The Tissue Fixation service ensures the proper preservation of biological tissues by stabilizing cellular and structural components immediately after collection. This process prevents degradation and autolysis, maintains tissue morphology, and prepares specimens for subsequent histological procedures. Effective tissue fixation is essential for producing accurate, reproducible, and interpretable microscopic results in research and instructional applications.

Tissue Staining

The Tissue Staining service provides contrast and definition to tissue sections to facilitate microscopic examination and interpretation. It includes Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining, the standard method for evaluating general tissue morphology, as well as other basic histological stains such as Periodic Acid–Schiff (PAS) for carbohydrates and basement membranes, Masson’s Trichrome for connective tissues, and Toluidine Blue for general tissue structure and mast cells. These staining methods support routine histological assessment for research and instructional purposes.

Microscopy/Microscopic Examination

The Microscopy/Microscopic Examination service provides detailed visualization and evaluation of prepared tissue sections using light microscopy. It includes photomicrograph services for high-quality image capture and documentation of histological features, supporting accurate analysis, record-keeping, presentations, and research reporting. This service is essential for reliable microscopic assessment and effective communication of findings.

Histopathological Analysis and Interpretation

The Histopathological Analysis and Interpretation service provides systematic evaluation of stained tissue sections to identify and describe microscopic features and tissue alterations. This service involves the assessment of cellular morphology, tissue architecture, and staining patterns to support research conclusions, academic studies, and investigative reporting. It ensures scientifically sound interpretation of histological findings for non-clinical, research, and instructional applications.
