History of RSRC
The Regional Science Research Center (RSRC) was inaugurated on April 26, 2017, as one of the core research facilities of Mindanao State University – General Santos City (MSU–GenSan). Strategically located within the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM) Complex, the RSRC was established to strengthen the university’s research capability and to address the scientific and developmental needs of Region XII (SOCCSKSARGEN).
The center was proposed through the visionary leadership of former Vice Chancellor Dr. Edna P. Guevarra and realized under the administration of former Chancellor Abdurrahman T. Canacan. Its initial development was supported by a budget of approximately PhP 9,000,000.00, funded by the Department of Budget and Management and the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev), formerly National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), reflecting strong institutional and national support for research infrastructure.
Since its establishment, the RSRC has served as a multidisciplinary hub for scientific inquiry and innovation. It houses specialized facilities, including the Molecular Biology Laboratory, Histopathology Laboratory, and the Natural Product Development (Salokra) Laboratory, which support faculty and student research, thesis and dissertation work, and externally funded projects. The center leads and supports studies in developmental biology, environmental science, biodiversity, natural resources, and intelligent systems, aligning its research agenda with regional and national priorities.
Beyond research, the RSRC plays a vital role in the university’s extension and service functions by providing a venue for collaborations, community-engaged projects, and policy-relevant scientific discussions. It has contributed to initiatives on sustainable resource management, including research on tuna conservation and natural product development. Guided by the mission of MSU–GenSan, the RSRC continues to advance research excellence, innovation, and community service, contributing meaningfully to academic development and regional socio-economic progress.
