Pierce Patch is a native plant and vegetable garden at a local public elementary school. We need volunteer assistance with perennial plant identification, vegetable plant growth, and care, weed management, native plant species identification. Commitment can be one-time to get us started but would prefer the option for multiple touchpoints throughout the spring and summer. 10-20 hours max. This is an opportunity to teach students about the lifecycle of a plant, extend classroom learning in the outdoors, identify local plants and the importance of native plant species, and finally, can serve as the beginning of discussions for the farm to table process.
A few projects we'd be interested in more specific help are 1: Tips for how to run an effective composting program at a school would be great.
2: We received a small grant from a local church to upgrade some of our garden beds that are beginning to decompose. Any resources to help with planning for that (best materials to use, consideration for changing layout with new beds, source to procure them from at a reasonable price, etc), or even to help build new ones in the spring would be greatly appreciated!
