The Emmanuel Community Farm was started in 2008 by Jon Adams, local gardening activist, when the Emmanuel Lutheran Church freely gave permission to the Southfield Parks and Garden Club to use almost one acre for volunteers to participate in a charitable program, growing a variety of fruits and vegetables to donate entirely to soup kitchens and food pantries for food insecure people. The Club’s website is https://www.southfieldparksandgarden.org/ and the farm techniques are explained under the heading “Community Farm”. The farm follows organic gardening practices as much as possible. While working at the farm, Extension Master Gardeners will assist less experienced gardeners, providing hands-on-instruction in good gardening practices. In the process, volunteers learn how to effectively grow food in a home garden. We have a shelter and comfortable lawn chairs for volunteers to take breaks. Please bring your own water. Tools are provided. We respect volunteers’ personal decisions whether to mask or not and keep a sign-in sheet for volunteers to record our names, hours and telephone numbers should there be any need for contact tracing. During 2020 and 2021, no volunteer at the farm became exposed to COVID.
