Assessment design is a part of teaching that can be quite complicating, and also often overlooked. It can also be particularly challenging when creating assessments for assessment-based lessons. My main focus in the MAFLT program was English language test preparation, and so my focus in assessment design is also about assessments regarding test-taking.
The purpose of this formative assessment is for students to prepare for the TOEFL Junior, which includes opportunities for feedback after each assessment. This assessment is not intended to provide accurate results on how students will perform on the actual TOEFL Junior exam, but to familiarize them with content, and emphasize reading comprehension. In doing so, students can learn and practice for assessment as a diagnostic in which they can identify their gaps in learning in order to improve.
