Reflective Essay on the MAFLT Program

stanko_FLT898_MAFLT_reflective_essay.docx

In my reflective essay, I examine the effects the MAFLT program has had on my teaching life. Primarily, it has given me the confidence to defend my particular method of teaching, which tends to lean more toward the sociocultural theory of second language acquisition. With many "experts" turned "celebrity" on social media, advocating for one particular approach for language teaching and acquisition, the MAFLT program has taught me to access and read the research on language pedagogy and learning. It has reinforced my belief that, as language teachers, we must read widely in second language acquisition research. One specific method will not result in language acquisition; there are many theories and methods that we can implement to respond to our students' needs in the classroom.
