ACTFL provides a number of educator resources to guide language teachers' "strategy and practice". The 2012 Proficiency Guidelines, 2012 Performance Descriptors, and 2017 Can-Do Statements documents can be used together to support teachers' development of appropriate, relevant and measurable objectives which can be used in self-assessment. Click the images below to access those resources, or click the titles below each document to visit ACTFL's resource pages for each material. See the Can-Do Training Video for more information on how to utilize these materials.
"The ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines 2012 are a description of what individuals can do with language in terms of speaking, writing, listening, and reading in real-world situations in a spontaneous and non-rehearsed context." They tell teachers and learners what language proficiency looks like at different levels.
The 2012 ACTFL Performance Guidelines "describe the language performance of language learners in Standards-based, performance-oriented learning environments". They tell teachers and learners what performance outcomes are appropriate for a specific communicative mode within a specific proficiency level.
The 2017 NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements "reflect the continuum of growth in communication skills through the Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Superior, and Distinguished levels". They clarify learning objectives using learner-friendly language. They help teachers and learners go from broad goals at a particular level to specific, concrete tasks which work towards those goals.
