This site contains resources, trainings and materials designed to support language teachers in writing locally-relevant, measurable Can-Do Statements and in implementing Can-Do self-assessments in their language classrooms. These materials were created in fulfillment of coursework for the MAFLT program at MSU, and the project was inspired by the LoLA project within the NLRC at MSU.
ABOUT THE CREATOR
My name is Laura López, and I am a language educator with experience teaching Spanish in the classroom to PK3 through 8th grade students in WI and IL and tutoring students up through the college level. I live with my family along the border of IL and WI, and we speak both Spanish and English in our home.
As a native English speaker, I began my own world language learning journey as a middle school student in WI. However, I really discovered my love of languages as an undergraduate student at Dartmouth College when I took my first linguistics class. I studied Latin and Spanish, and while at Dartmouth, I studied abroad in Puebla, Mexico and received a fellowship to teach English in the Dominican Republic. Living, studying and working abroad further developed my linguistic and intercultural competence and my passion for learning and teaching languages. I pursued my Master's in Foreign Language Teaching through MSU in order to develop my pedagogical skills further and to delve more deeply into language education theory and practice.
This site is the product of what I have learned and how I have developed as an educator and leader throughout my time in the MAFLT program. I am passionate about empowering language learners to develop agency in their learning, and I strive to develop assessment materials which lead to meaningful, actionable feedback. It is my hope that the materials on this site will be of use to others in their own language teaching journeys.
