History of Thanksgiving

By: Katie Cumbee

The real reason Thanksgiving is a holiday isn’t because of letting students get out of school for two days, or so everyone can rest on Thursday and shop on Friday.Thanksgiving started on November 21st, 1621.

One day when pilgrims were surviving on the rocky soil and in the cool climate, a native tribe, called the Wampanoag tribe came and helped the pilgrims survive by using fish remains as fertilizer for the crops so they could grow. The pilgrims decided to show their gratitude to the natives by holding a feast. Ninety natives from the tribe and 52 Englishmen or pilgrims celebrated their first harvest in the New World.

The harvest was of multicolored flint corn or maize, this lasted for three days of celebrating. The food there was cod, bass, lobster, clams, mussels, corn, porridge, bread, fruits, etc. but the only things that weren’t there were mashed potatoes, cranberry jam, turkey, and gravy and other dishes normally served that weren’t invented until after the first thanksgiving. The years went on and Thanksgiving started to become a holiday rather than a harvest. A holiday we still celebrate today!
