An academic/varsity Letter in Orchestra recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional dedication, musical excellence, and service to the program beyond standard course requirements. Letter awards are presented annually during the Music Awards Night in May.
To qualify for an orchestra letter, students must meet all of the following baseline criteria throughout the school year:
Academic Performance: Maintain an "A" average in Orchestra.
Concert Attendance: Attend 100% of required concerts (unless granted an official excused absence by Dr. Zeleski).
Ensemble Citizenship: Maintain status as a member in good standing. Students are expected to demonstrate positive leadership, collaborative teamwork, and professional conduct that contribute to a supportive ensemble environment.
In addition to meeting baseline eligibility, students must actively distinguish themselves through extra service, leadership, or performance. Here are examples of how a student may distinguish themselves.
Serving as a student leader, section leader, or peer mentor/coach.
Volunteering for concert setup and logistics (e.g., Graduation, Elementary concerts).
Assisting Dr. Zeleski with instrument tuning or student movement during elementary concerts.
Assisting program staff with post-concert receptions.
Earning initial induction into the Tri-M National Music Honor Society.
Selection to the All-State Orchestra.
Performing in an ASTA or NSAA-sponsored Solo & Ensemble contest.
Performing in the Musical Pit Orchestra.
Active participation in orchestra social events (More than just one event).
Note: Dr. Zeleski retains final authority and discretion regarding all letter awards presented on behalf of the program.
Awards are calculated carefully, but administrative oversights can occasionally occur. If a student believes an eligible activity was inadvertently omitted from their record, they should schedule a time to review their qualifications directly with Dr. Zeleski.
