How to Apply
1. Apply Using One of these Methods
The Common App-The Common Application helps streamline the college application process. Through this application, students can apply to multiple colleges at once. More than 900 schools accept the Common App.
Institutional Websites-If the school you are applying to does not accept the Common App, or you are choosing not to use the Common App, apply through the individual school's website. Most websites typically have a large Apply button on the homepage!
Minnesota State Colleges & Universities-This online application allows you to apply to one or several Minnesota State colleges & universities
Common Black College App-Similar to the Common App, the Common Black College App allows students to apply to a variety of Historically Black Colleges & Universities at once!
2. Gather All Application Materials
Not all schools require the same application materials, so make sure to research what each college or university requires you to submit!
ACT/SAT Scores - Many schools ask students to provide either/both their ACT or SAT scores. To submit test scores, students must directly send them through the ACT or SAT websites. Southwest is not responsible for sending your ACT or SAT scores to colleges!
College Essays - The college essay is your opportunity to stand out and share more about who you are! Each university/college may have different essay questions or topics.
Check out these resources and visit the CCC for more support on writing your college essay!
Letters of Recommendation - Colleges/universities may ask for letters of recommendations from people who know you well to get a better understanding of your skills, accomplishments, and personality.
Students should identify 1-2 core teachers from junior year who can speak well about their academic, social, and personal strengths.
Final Transcript - At the end of the school year, your Southwest Counselor will send your final transcript to the ONE school you have chosen to attend.
3. Schedule your Senior Meeting
Once you have a solid list of schools you plan to apply to, its important to schedule your Senior Meeting with your counselor. During this meeting, you will share your college list with your counselor, request letters of recommendation from teachers, talk about final transcripts, and any other next steps.
You can schedule your senior meeting by emailing your counselor directly or emailing our Counseling Clerk Lora Grafenstein-Kinzel at lora.grafenstein-kinzel@mpls.k12.mn.us. In your email, indicate the deadline for your first college application. Senior meetings should be scheduled at least 1 month before your first college application deadline!
4. Apply for Financial Aid
Visit our Financial Aid tab for more information about financial aid and how to apply.
5. Make a Decision!
Once you've received notification of acceptance to the different colleges and universities you applied to, it's time to make a decision! Once again reflect on if the school is a right fit for YOU. Connect with current college students one more time. Compare financial aid packages and contact the financial aid office if you have questions about your financial aid package or if you would like to appeal the award package. Do whatever you need to do to make the best and most informed decision for yourself! Be sure to accept your offer by putting down a security deposit by the college or university's deadline.
