Welcome to my 6th grade TPOL. My name is Dorothy Boone and today I’m going to show you how my views of the habits of heart and mind have changed, along with many other character aspects.
The 6th grade lens is Confidence. At the beginning of the year, Confidence meant to me that I would be good enough in whatever I did that confidence would come naturally to me. At the beginning of the year, I demonstrated this lens by trying so hard to be good at everything I do, and didn’t really focus on the confidence part of it. Now, I know that confidence is about being confident in your skill level, no matter what that skill level is.
I have gained confidence this year in biking. Last year I got into a bad bike class that made me feel like everybody was better than me, and that even when I was trying my hardest it didn't help at all. This year, I got into a better class, and that really helped with my confidence. I worked hard in this class, and it paid off. I did a bike trip this weekend and it took me 2 hours for 10 miles on the way there with all my bikepacking gear, and only 1 hour on the way back.
In class, I have grown by being more confident in my science, because at the beginning of the year I was not as good at it and wasn't sure about a lot of things for a lot of our first semester. Now, I am confident in the sixth grade standards of confidence, and believe that I am ready for seventh grade in all subjects.
Mrs. Dunlop shows all of the habits of heart and mind every day. She respects people who deserve it, like other teachers and students, and always puts the effort in to be nice to her students. She is an awesome teacher and I know that next year's 6th graders will like her just as much as me. She also makes sure that her student friendships are fostered throughout whatever grade that that student is in. She shows integrity by always making sure that her and her students do the right thing, and helped me when my integrity was not with me. Mrs. Dunlop also helps her students refine their in-class projects. She has helped me at least once to make my work better. I try to be like this inspiring person in my life by being friendly to everyone and putting effort into friendships and schoolwork alike.
At the beginning of the year, I demonstrated integrity by staying on task whenever the teachers left the classroom. I did not, however, remind my peers to do so.
I understood integrity to mean doing the right thing when nobody's watching. This view has changed some by now, and I know that integrity is more than that. Integrity is doing the right thing no matter what. Whether the topic is challenging or not, whether you’re bored by class or not.
At some point this year, my integrity strayed from me, and I had to fill out a processing sheet. I realized why I had been wrong to do that, and I rewrote what I had done wrong. This experience will help me in the future, because what I did could have very bad consequences in the future. If I hadn’t gotten caught doing this, who knows when I would’ve stopped, especially if it happened later in life. This is the finished project after I rewrote it.

Using integrity is part of everyday life, and one example of this is all of the tests that I’ve done this year. I’ve had a unit test for (almost) every unit in math, and I never cheated off my peers, not even once. I worked hard, and got meets and exceeds on every test. That hard work paid off, and I now have an overall grade in infinite campus of a meets in math, even in the seventh grade standard units.
At the beginning of the year, I demonstrated effort by working hard in all my school projects, and reaching for exceeds every time.
For this project, I created an infographic about the history of Fort Lewis as a Native American Boarding School. The target for this was to learn about and write an infographic on the history of Fort Lewis Native American Boarding School. I exceeded the target of this assignment. To complete it, I had to create slides outlining the details of the Indian boarding school at Fort Lewis described in a recent report. I learned that you need to plan out what you're going to write ahead of time. In future projects, I will put the effort in to manage my time more wisely so as to not have to rush in the end.
In this unit, we learned about proportions and proportional relationships. I feel like I used integrity throughout this unit by staying on task and being focused on my math. Towards the end of this unit, we learned about the circumference, areas, radiuses, and diameters of circles, and how to solve for another using one of these parts of a circle. Also, I feel like I demonstrated effort by working to get the pages of the book done quickly and correctly, so that I could work hard on a harder math book.
At the beginning of the year, I demonstrated refinement by occasionally going back to check my work.
I understood refinement to mean checking your work that you’re unsure of after the test is done. By the end of this year, I realized that that’s only part of refinement. Refinement is about just going back and editing and revising your work, from math tests to journal prompts, refining is going back to check on your work, no matter how sure you are of your answers.
This assignment was about compound and simple sentences. We had to write a story with compound sentences, simple sentences, and (if we wanted an exceeds) words from the word wall. I used refinement in this, because I wrote it and then went back to highlight it, while also checking grammar and punctuation.
On this quiz, I got every answer correct. I think that I also demonstrated refinement that, when I finished, I went back and double-checked my work. I think I also demonstrated integrity by not cheating by looking at others' assessments. All in all, I think I did well on paper, and I demonstrated habits of heart and mind, too.
At the beginning of the year, my goal for ownership was to do tasks without being reminded. I didn't really achieve this goal. This could have made me able to reach for exceeds by not having to catch up on homework or other assignments last minute less often . My mom was so helpful in this by reminding me to make lists, but I still have work to do.
Also, I feel like I worked on my ownership goal by trying to get the necessary pages done quickly and correctly, so I could reach for exceeds through extensions on my work.
My 2 ducks are inspired by how John Nieto was a Native American artist and how he colored his art vividly and brightly colored. I used oil pastel to color it in and a reference image from online for the outline. I have a connection with the artwork because me and my family always go duck hunting together and it’s really fun. I think viewers will feel the freedom a duck has, to fly or waddle to faraway places, and the carefreeness of the animals in the vibrant colors. I worked on my ownership goal for this by managing my time well so as to be able to help others and feel like I did this to the best of my ability.
At the beginning of the year, my goal for helpfulness was to help manage the team’s problems, because I sometimes contribute to them and I think that I should work harder to be the solution, not the problem.
I achieved this goal by trying to collaborate on my projects, even when my partners weren’t getting along, and in only 2 people assignments I tried to divide up the work so neither of us worked too much or not enough, so as to not affect our grades negatively.
In this exhibition, me and my friend Anda got to work together to come up with a solution to some of the many farming problems worldwide. I worked using my helpfulness goal so that Anda was caught up with her work, because she had just gotten back from Thailand, while also trying to evenly divide up tasks.
In this project, me and my partner, Darcy, worked on making people aware of the injustices in Bangladesh by making a poster. I used my helpfulness goal by trying to divide up the work equally, and making sure both of us worked hard on it.
At the beginning of the year, my goal for respect was to disagree more diplomatically with others in the group, and to always be solution focused. I achieved this goal by working hard to make compromises in our projects, but also making sure that all of our opinions are heard and used, unless they completely contrast with the rest of the group’s opinions.
In this exhibition, me and Kaylee worked on creating a model that we would present to show our expertise on a topic (ours was the Northwest Coast Native Americans). I used respect by respecting Kaylee’s ideas, and trying to incorporate both of our ideas into this exhibition, both research and presentation-wise. One example of this within the project is the science part of it, where Kaylee wanted to do comics, and I wanted to do more of a model. I had the idea to combine them to creating a model, and then have our comic characters say stuff about the model on it.
In digital media, I use respect all the time. When Flora and I collaborate on a photoshop or illustrator project, I make sure that we collaborate on what to do and how to do it. This will help in the future by knowing how to collaborate with my peers.
I have grown a lot in 6th grade. I am proud of so many things, especially my growth in this year’s lense, confidence. When I walked into school on the first day, I wasn’t confident in much. My friendships from the previous year had degraded, and I was worried about what this year might bring. Now, I am confident in my abilities and cannot wait for seventh grade.
I am ready for 7th grade because I have grown so much as a person and sixth grader, emotionally and through school. I am ready for 7th grade because I feel ready and that seventh grade will help me grow even more.
