English Language Arts
In grade six, students will focus on point of view, theme, central idea, defining words, figurative language, inferences, tracing arguments, research, narrative writing, literary argument writing, using evidence & explanation to support ideas, and grammar instruction through looking at model sentences (“language dives”).
Mathematics
In sixth grade math, students will learn the concept of rates and ratios and use these tools to solve word problems. Students will extend their previous work with fractions and decimals to understand the concept of rational numbers—any number that can be made by dividing one integer by another, such as ½, 0.67, or 9. Students will also learn how to write and solve equations—mathematical statements using symbols, such as x - 2 = 6 and apply these skills in solving multi-step word problems. If time permits, students will dabble in statisitcs using various types of graphs.
Understanding ratios and rates and using them for problem solving.
Understanding negative numbers, placement on number line, absolute value.
Extending coordinate plane to include the negative side of both horizontal and vertical number lines. Plot and naming points on all 4 quadrants. Problem solving distance in the coordinate plane.
How to define variables, write expressions, solve one-step equations algebraically and with tape diagrams, graphing inequalities.
Area of parallelograms and triangles. Decompose and compose shapes. Geometry problem solving on coordinate plane (drawing, distance, perimeter). Volume, nets, and surface area.
Statistical questions, creating dot plots and histograms, mean as balance, data distribution, box plots
Science
In sixth-grade science, students will use the scientific method to test different properties and practice hands on measurement. Students will be introduced to the structure and function of the cell. A basic understanding of matter such as states, energy, heat, and temperature will be taught along with atomic theory. Students will also explore electricity, magnetism, and forces that shape the Earth's surface.
