The Fifth Grade Scope & Sequence shows what teachers plan to teach each quarter of the school year. The scope and sequence lists the academic expectations for each academic subject. Click on the document to expand and see all of the subjects. In addition, access more information below to learn about specific skills you can expect fifth graders to learn during the school year.
English Language Arts
In grade five, students will continue to build important reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. They will read more challenging literature, articles, and other sources of information through independent and choral reading. Emphasis will be placed on growing students' vocabulary through the use of context clues. Students will also be expected to understand and clearly summarize what they have learned from readings and classroom discussions, referring to specific evidence and details from the text. Students will be writing different forms of essays, such as narrative, informative and comparison in order to continue to develop their ability to gather, organize, interpret, and present information. Revising and editing skills will be key components this year to help strengthen their writing.
Text Evidence example:
Who is Tilda? Give text evidence to support your answer.
Tilda is the name of the balloon/airship that Mr. Bobbins was flying in. On page 151 it says, “‘Of course. Yes, indeed, the airship. Tilda being the name of the airship,’ the professor concludes thoughtfully.”
Weekly vocabulary tests with words that come from their shared reading text.
Separate spelling words weekly.
Students use checklists to edit/revise their own essays. Ensuring that they have all the main parts of their introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.
Mathematics
In grade five, students will strengthen their understanding of the place value system by working with decimals. Students will also add, subtract, and multiply fractions, including fractions with unlike denominators. They will continue to expand their geometry and measurement skills, learning the concept of volume.
Place Value 10x larger or 1/10 of, 100x larger or 1/100 of. Powers of 10, exponents. Rounding decimals to any place value. Add, subtract, multiply, divide decimals to hundredths.
Multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm. Add, subtract, multiply, divide decimals to hundredths using concrete models or drawings. Understanding zero patterns when multiplying by powers of 10.
Finding common denominators when adding unlike denominator fractions and mixed numbers greater than 1.
Relate fractions as a division to a fraction of a set. Finding fraction as a measurement. Convert mixed unit measurement. 7x1/4 or
2 ⅔ gallons to cups.
Building and counting unit cubes. Find the volume of a right rectangular prism by packing with cubic units and counting. Finding volume of rectangular prism with area given.
Drawing figures in a coordinate plane.

In fifth grade, students study the states and property of matter matter through the reading of the Volcano Book. Students will develop a better understanding of energy, through both the water cycle and food webs. Students will also begin studying space, gravity, and the cause and effects of the Earth's rotation around the sun.
