The Fourth Grade Scope & Sequence shows what teachers plan to teach each quarter of the school year. The scope and sequence lists the academic expectations for each academic subject. English Language Arts
In grade four, students will continue to build important English and Language Arts skills. They will read more challenging literature, articles, and other sources of information.
They will also be expected to clearly explain in detail what they have read by citing textual evidence from the text.
Students will be expected to organize their ideas and write a developed 4 - 5 paragraph essay using correct conventions and grammar. For example, they will write narratives, informative essays, and opinion pieces.
Citing textual evidence -- Paul ends the entry thinking that he will be afraid of Erik and Arthur. Do you think he is right to think this? Why or why not? Use evidence from the text. -- Students give the page number for their evidence in their response. For example: On page 59 it says, “________________”
For example, students write super sentences with appropriate capitals and punctuation.
Students write a variety of essays with an introduction, body, and conclusion. Students organize their main idea and supporting details into the body paragraphs.
Read Hatchet and write a survival story.
Mathematics
In grade four, your child will use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to solve word problems. The use of the addition algorithm with five digits and rounding will be key concepts this year, as well as remainders in division. Students will continue to build their understanding of fractions, by adding and subtracting those with common denominators. Basic geometrical concepts will be studied as well as metric measurement and conversions .

Covert m, km, and cm using a number line. Gram to kilogram conversions
Measuring angles using a protractor. Identify acute, right, and obtuse. Identify segments, line segments, lines, and points. Parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines.
Partial Product before starting basic algorithm for multiplication.
Memorize formulas for area/perimeter
Factor pairs: prime/composite. Unit fractions, equivalent, and comparing. Multiply a fraction by a whole number. Add and subtract fractions with like denominators. Begin discussion on decimal fractions.
Science
In fourth grade, students learn the scientific method. Students will develop a better understanding of energy, through ramps and roller coaster projects. Emphasis this year will be on sound waves, physical, life, and earth science.

Social Science
In fourth grade, students will focus learning on the state of Illinois and the United States. Time will be spent discussing the areas below:
Civics: Branches of Government, Citizenship
Geography: Interpreting & creating U.S. & Illinois maps
Financial Literacy: Spending choices, goods, services
History: Revolutionary War, Early Illinois History
Using the textbook, mainly for history and geography standards.
Using many other supplemental materials for civics, financial literacy, and more. For example, Teachers Pay Teachers materials, Prairie Pages, and more. We study the Revolutionary War when we read a book on the topic for the Bookworms curriculum.
Junior Achievement for financial literacy.
Physical Education, Music, and Art
Physical education, music, and art is provided to the students several times a week. Students are exposed to a variety of exercises, musical, and artistic experiences.
Fourth Grade physical education will focus on :
Jogging/Running 6weeks; Paddles and Balls 3 weeks; Volleyball 4 weeks ; Fitness 5 weeks ; Table Tennis 3 weeks ; Nutrition/Fitness 6 weeks ; Basketball 4 weeks ; and Cooperative Games 5 weeks
