STORY SUMMARY

_______________________________________

Kirsten Stidsholt works with crafts that are usually male-dominated on the small island of Fanø where there is a long history of sailors and self-dependent women. Men went on the sea for work and the women were left to take care of the homes and fields. But the dynamic and needs have changed in modern times, and Stidsholt lives a self-sufficient lifestyle selling agricultural products, cooking and teaching about nature's offerings.

Fanø, Denmark is Kirsten Stidsholt's birthplace and where she grew up with her parents. The island has around 3,500 inhabitants and has a long tradition for maritime business, as it had one of the biggest harbors of Denmark in the 19th century.

Kirsten Stidsholt has pursued many paths in life. After finishing elementary and high school, she studied the craft of agriculture. Later, she combined the craft with traveling, before she went back home to teach. All of this gave her skills that she uses as a freelance nature guide on the island of Fanø, where she was born and lives today.

In the evening, Kirsten Stidsholt cuts a bouquet of flowers from her flower field for a friend. She walks the lanes to see what colors go well together as the flowers are growing late into the season.

During the shearing of the sheep, Kirsten Stidsholt keeps track of the herd and their numbers, as well as collecting the wool for her friend's wool business.

Kirsten Stidsholt was born on January 28, 1960, in the town of Rindby, Denmark on the island of Fanø where she lives close to the Wadden Sea.

Today, Kirsten Stidsholt lives by herself at her house where she keeps her animals and stocks. It is not a farm, but she grows a lot of the ingredients that she uses in baking goods that she sells from her private home for her business.

A lot of people usually come by the house during the day, which makes Kirsten Stidsholt happy. She likes the company, and as she says, she can always do some work while they get comfortable.

Everyday Kirsten Stidsholt lets her animals in and out of their respective houses. The chicken and ducks usually walk around her property freely during the day, but she makes sure to take them inside as it gets dark.

While she has a lot of various tasks and jobs to do as a freelancer, she also helps out at the local wool carpenter. Thursday was supposed to be her only day off work, but her friend and Lis asked her to come help her business by shearing her sheep’s wool.

September is always a busy month for Kirsten Stidsholt. She makes sure to hold track of her plans by writing everything down on notes.

Kirsten Stidsholt and Kenneth chat during a break from shearing sheep when they are halfway through the 43 sheep.

Kirsten Stidsholt walks the beach during her guided nature tour. She likes the lifestyle as a freelancer, as she gets to do exactly what makes her happy and have the freedom to pass on the things she doesn’t want to do. The nature and culture of the island is something that gives her a feeling of belonging.
