After losing his shoe repair business during the Covid-19 lockdown, Armeet Singh of Delhi, India joined the nonprofit organization, ‘Dhan Guru Nanak Sewa Mission,’ which follows the principles of the Sikh faith. As an ambulance driver, he and his coworkers serve the underprivileged by providing food, medicines, transportation, and care to those in need. Singh’s job offers him an opportunity to give back to his community, while caring for his wife and two children.

Armeet Singh, 38, stands outside the Dhan Guru Nanak Sewa Mission in Delhi, where he answers questions related to the free food and medicine service to those in need. On any given day he might oversee the giveaways or end up driving the mission’s ambulance. DGNSM has three centers to provide these facilities which are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Armeet Singh parks the ambulance in front of the Dhan Guru Nanak Sewa Mission. The organization maintains three ambulances for medical emergencies and recieves dozens of calls each week. Patients always ring up either Amreet or his boss if they want free transport to hospital.

Armeet Singh rents a wheelchair for an elderly woman. The mission provides a variety of ambulatory devices designed to raise the standard of care for the poor. Rentals and other expenses are borne by the organization themselves. People in the locality have unlimited access to basic necessities and other facilities provided by them.

Armeet Singh’s week is interrupted by a visit to court to settle a business matter. Here he tells his son Fateh Singh about the case. Amreet’s family suffers from financial instability due to adverse effects of lockdowns and shutting down of his business. He looks after all the financial aspects of his family alone.

Armeet Singh drives the ambulance through a busy street on a rainy day. Although the ambulances are equipped with emergency sirens and lights, they are often caught in traffic jams.

Tanpreet Singh treats a patient on a stretcher before they leave for hospital. The mission provides ambulances for indigent patients, some of whom can’t afford a trip to the hospital.

Workers of the Dhan Guru Nanak Sewa Mission share a laugh before leaving for their homes at the end of the day.

Armeet Singh returns home late in the evening. Amreet’s house is situated near Jangpura, New Delhi in narrow alleys. Often he comes home late around 10 p.m. after completing deliveries of food items to nearby homes.
