Health Requirements

Monroe County Intermediate School District Early Head Start and Head Start Programs work with various community partners to provide high-quality health, oral health, mental health, and nutritional services that are developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate and that will support each child's growth and school readiness.

1302.42 of the Head Start Program Performance Standards/the State of Michigan Childcare Licensing requires a program to

  • verify each child has a minimum of 1 dose of each immunizing agent specified by the department of health and human services, or has a copy of a waiver addressed to DHHS and signed by the parent stating immunizations are not being administered due to religious, medical or other reasons, prior to being enrolled into the program. The child will be excluded if this requirement is not met.

  • verify each child whose immunizations were not up-to-date at the time of enrollment has an updated certificate showing completion of all additional immunization requirements as specified by DHHS within 30 days of enrollment, unless there is a statement on file by a licensed healthcare provider stating immunizations are in progress. The child will be excluded if this requirement is not met.

  • identify if a child has access to continuous accessible health services and health insurance within 30 days of entry into the program. If not, the program is required to assist the family in connecting with community resources to establish a primary care physician and/or insurance.

  • obtain a healthcare determination dated within 1 year (physical) within 30 days of entry into the program, and annually thereafter. The child will be excluded if this requirement is not met.

  • obtain documentation of an evidence-based hearing and vision screening within 45 days of entry into the program.

  • obtain documentation of a dental health determination, lead and hemoglobin/hematocrit screening within 90 days of entry into the program.

  • work with families ongoing to follow recommended schedules of well-child and oral health-care.

  • Work with families to seek and receive follow-up care as recommended in any health/dental health/mental health care determination.
