"The Cognitive Ability Test (CogAT) measures students' general abstract reasoning abilities with different types of verbal, quantitative, & nonverbal questions."

The CogAT is administered to all First Grade students and any NEW second and third grade students


The Score Breakdown

Standard Age Score (SAS) : "This score compares a an individual's performance with that of other individuals who are the same age. The Standard Age Score scale in a normalized scale with a standard deviation of 16 and an average score of 100" (Part 1: Overview of CogAT scores).

Cognitive Ability as measured by the CogAT:

SAS Score

132 or higher = gifted range

117-131 = above average range

84-116 = average range

84 & below = below average range
