To ensure the success of the Tribe’s gaming enterprises by training and developing highly competent individuals to protect the Tribe’s assets, and maintain the public’s confidence in the integrity of the gaming enterprises.
The Saint Regis Tribal Gaming Commission is responsible for regulatory oversight of the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort and the Mohawk Bingo Palace. The Gaming Commission is a wholly independent department of the Saint Regis Mohawk and was created by the Tribal Gaming Ordinance.
The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (the “IGRA”) of 1988 was the Congressional response to the U.S. Supreme Courts affirmation of Tribal Sovereignty over is lands and its members in California v. Cabazon Band of Mission Indians (1987). The IGRA set forth the regulatory framework for proper regulation of gaming on Indian Lands. The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (the “Tribe”) operated the Mohawk Bingo Palace pre-IGRA. In 1993 the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council passed the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Gaming Ordinance, this received the required IGRA approval by the Chairman of the National Indian Gaming Commission in 1994. The Tribe negotiated a Tribal-State Compact with the State of New York in 1993. The Tribe opened the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino in 1999.
