The Commission was created in 1993 by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Gaming Ordinance (the “Ordinance”). This legislation designated the Commission with regulatory oversight of the gaming facilities operated by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe. The Commission regulates gaming in Akwesasne to the Ordinance, the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, the Tribal-State Compact between the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe and State of New York, the National Indian Gaming Commission regulations and Minimum Internal Control Standards and the Tribal Internal Control Standards.

The Commission is composed of three part-time members including a Chair, Vice-Chair, and one Commissioner. The Commissioners are appointed by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council. Led by the Executive Director who oversees the day-to-day operations, the Commission has approximately forty-seven full-time employees. The staff is split into five departments; Licensing, Inspectors, Audit, Surveillance and Gaming Network.

The Executive Director reports to the Gaming Commissioners and is responsible for implementation of the policies set by the Gaming Commissioners, and is in charge of the daily operations of the Commission’s staff.
