FAQ Academic

Qn: Are there allocated HBL Days?

HBL (Home Based Learning) is a regular feature of school to ensure that students are able to continue learning should there be a school closure. At ZPS, students may engage in HBL on days when there is no physical school such as during PSLE marking days. More details will be given closer to these days.

Qn: Will there be HBL for Primary 1 pupils?

The school will plan for HBL for all levels as part of its emergency preparedness as well as to develop traits of self-directedness in our students. For P1, we will be planning for HBL in Term 4 during the PSLE Marking days.

Qn: Would I be informed of my child’s progress on a regular basis other than during PTM?

Individual pupil’s progress will be conveyed by FT/subject teachers to parents via several means e.g. through formative assessment (mini tests, classroom assignments etc) as well as through Parent-Teacher conferences (in March and May). Parents could also contact teachers for updates e.g. via their email at any time of the year.

Qn: How do we know if the child has homework or assignment for the day? Is homework assigned daily?

Learning at foundational years of P1 and P2 is meant to promote the joy of learning without having too much stress of homework.

In Term 1, our approach is to focus on individual, group and class work; this allows the pupils to be supported by their peer and teachers, easing the transition into P1. Thus, in term 1, homework is kept to a minimum. Should there be any homework, the teacher will send out a message via PG to the parents. For any urgent matters, the teacher will also attach a slip of paper to the Pupil's Diary. We would appreciate it if parents can check the PG and your child’s Pupil's Diary daily.

*Parents may also refer to the Form Teachers’ Introductory Letter sent at the beginning of the year for the communication channels to your child’s respective teachers.

Qn: Will my P1 child be getting any spelling list?

In Primary 1, the school would want your child to focus on settling himself/herself in the class and be familiar with the school environment in the 1st Term. As such, our P1 pupils will only be given the spelling list from Term 2 onward. Spelling is conducted once a week.

Qn: Since there are no formal assessments for P1 and P2, how will the pupils be streamed into P3 classes?

Learning at foundational years of P1 and P2 is meant to promote the joy of learning without being stressed by assessments. Teachers will be monitoring the progress of P1 students through formative assessments as well as through an observation of their learning dispositions. Teachers will use this information to group students into mixed ability classes and allow for better mixing of students of various strengths. Opportunities will be provided for P3 students of various learning abilities to be stretched or supported.

Qn: Please explain the new PSLE scoring system.

ZPS will be sharing in detail about the PSLE scoring system at our Parent Academic Workshops to be held by May 2024. Meanwhile, parents who are keen can find out more about the PSLE scoring system on the MOE website.
