H1 Mathematics
Subject Information
8865 H1 Mathematics
Subject description
Designed to prepare students who wish to pursue a degree in business administration or social sciences studies in university.
Business, Accountancy
Social sciences studies: Psychology, Economics, Social Work, Sociology, History, Geography, Communications & New Media, etc.
Designed for students WITHOUT O-Level Additional Math.
H1 Math includes topics in pure mathematics and statistics that provide foundational knowledge and skills in mathematics that support learning and applications in business and social sciences.
In a broad sense, there are 3 content strands in H1 Math, namely:
Functions and Graphs
Calculus (Differentiation and Integration)
Probability and Statistics
H1 Math Syllabus can be found at the following link:
Pre-requisites
Students should have obtained a pass in O-Level Math.
Scheme of Assessment
There will be one 3-hour paper marked out of 100 as follows:
Section A (Pure Mathematics – 40 marks) will consist of about 5 questions of different lengths and marks based on the Pure Mathematics section of the syllabus.
Section B (Probability and Statistics – 60 marks) will consist of 6 to 8 questions of different lengths and marks based on the Probability and Statistics section of the syllabus.
There will be one question on the application of Mathematics in real-world contexts, including those from business and the social sciences. This question will carry at least 12 marks and may require concepts and skills from more than one topic.
Candidates will be expected to answer all questions
Enrichment opportunities in YIJC / Unique teaching approach
Students will have the opportunity to go through a series of learning experiences that reflect the nature of mathematical practices which mathematicians engage in. In particular, these learning experiences could involve:
Real-world problem solving (eg. model and solve real-world problems with mathematics and statistics, investigate real-world applications of mathematics and statistics);
Investigations and mathematical ideas or results, drawing connections between topics within mathematics and between mathematics and other disciplines;
H1 Math students will also have opportunities to attend and participate in a variety of mathematics competitions and learning journey opportunities:
Learning Journey to Changi Meteorological Station
Learning Journey to NUS Department of Mathematics
Australian Mathematics Competition
Singapore Math Kangaroo Contest
Skill attainment
The aims of H1 Mathematics are to enable students to:
(a) acquire mathematical concepts and skills to support their tertiary studies in business and the social sciences
(b) develop thinking, reasoning, communication and modelling skills through a mathematical approach to problem-solving
(c) connect ideas within mathematics and apply mathematics in the context of business and social sciences
(d) experience and appreciate the value of mathematics in life and other disciplines.
FAQ
Q1) How should a student decide between H1 or H2 Math?
A student would need to consider his or her own strengths, interests and the university course pre-requisites. H2 Math is a rigorous 2 year course where students are assumed to have acquired knowledge and have a good foundation on the content of O-Level Additional Math.
Most science and engineering courses would require students to offer H2 Math. If a student is not keen in such courses and is not good in Math, he or she should consider offering H1 Math instead.
H1 Math provides students with a foundation in Math and statistics that will support their business or social sciences studies at the university. Students without Additional Math are strongly encouraged to offer H1 Math to help widen their options as some courses like Business Administration and Accountancy require either H1 Math or Additional Math.
2) What are some of the real world context problems that I might come across in H1 Math?
In H1 Math, you will see applications of the concepts learnt, such as:
Maximising profits
Minimising costs
Financial math (profit and cost analysis, demand and supply, banking insurance, etc.)
Games of chance, elections
Market research (consumer preferences, product claims, etc.)
Q3) Is it compulsory to have a graphing calculator (GC)?
Yes, the use of an approved GC without computer algebra system will be expected. The examination papers will be set with the assumption that candidates will have access to GC.
Please refer to the following link for the list of approved GCs.
https://www.seab.gov.sg/home/examinations/approved-calculators
Information on purchase of GC (Latest model: TI-84 Plus CE Python)
The “back to school” price for a GC is $177. Please note that this special price is only offered at the direct sales booth in college on the following dates.
Date and Time: 19 Feb 2.45-4.30pm and 22 Feb 11.15am-1.15pm
Venue: Area behind the General Office
Note:
H1 Math students (non FAS students) are strongly encouraged to purchase the GC on 19 Feb as we will be using the GC for the first topic covered from 19 February onwards.
To reduce the queuing time, students who are paying by cash are advised to bring the exact amount (coins will not be accepted).
Students who wish to use PayNow must make payment at the booth, using students' own phone.
Support for students on Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS)
Students on MOE FAS can choose to:
- loan a GC from college and return it upon graduation OR
- purchase a GC at a special discounted price of $84 through the college
Students on college FAS can purchase a GC at $84 through the college.
Students who wish to apply for financial assistance are to submit their eFAS application (refer to https://yijc.moe.edu.sg/admissions/scholarships-and-financial-assistance) as soon as possible so that the Math Department can liaise with the students to do a temporary GC loan to facilitate learning and also submit their names for the purchase of the GC at the special discounted price.
Students who are applying for financial assistance and who wish to purchase a GC at the special discounted price or loan a GC must not purchase the GC at the direct sales booth in college. There will not be any refund once the GCs are sold.
