MLEP is an enrichment programme and it is compulsory for all MLEP students to take H2 MLL.

H3 Malay is only offered to academically outstanding students. These students must have a good L1R5 and perform well consistently for ALL their subjects during their first year of study. H3 lessons may be conducted at the universities.

Students will be given two bonus points for admission to YIJC. They will also be given bonus points for university admission if they choose to pursue Malay Studies in NUS, or Communication Studies in NTU or Malay Language and Literature at NIE. On top of that, all students who take up MLEP will be eligible to apply for MOE MLEP scholarship.

4 H3 Subjects

A subject at H3 level is one with a variety of learning opportunities (e.g. advanced content, research paper or university module). It is somewhat equivalent to ‘S’ paper prior to 2006. However, there is a separate syllabus for H3 as compared to H2. Students taking H3 subjects would need to travel to NUS/NTU/SMU (selected by college) or remain in college (if the college offers the subject at H3 level) for lessons.

H3 subjects are meant to allow exceptionally strong students to pursue a subject or area in which they have the interest and aptitude. Besides passion for a particular subject, students must have the time to manage a workload beyond the norm subject load as H3 subjects have separate syllabuses that take students beyond the H2 syllabus.

You cannot select H3 during JAE. You select only subjects at H1 and H2 levels during this period. Students will be selected and offered H3 by the college based on overall academic performance in JC1.

You can only take a subject at H3 level if you have taken it at H2 level. For example, if you want to take Mathematics as a subject at H3 level, then you would also need to have taken Mathematics at the H2 level.

Studying a H3 subject is not a prerequisite to many scholarships offered by universities and other institutions or organizations. Performing well at the A Levels in one’s H1 and H2 subjects can instead be a stronger qualifier.
