West Nile Virus
We want to inform you about a recent development regarding West Nile virus on Patuxent Research Refuge and the Eastern Ecological Science Center.
On August 15, 2023, MDA identified a West Nile Virus positive mosquito on Central Tract. The mosquito sample was collected at the boundary gate between North and Central tracts just passed the Duvall bridge.
We take the health and safety of our staff and volunteers seriously, and we want to provide you with information on how to stay safe and minimize the risk of exposure to the virus.
What is West Nile Virus?
West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause mild to severe illness. While most people infected with the virus do not develop any symptoms, some may experience flu-like symptoms, and in rare cases, it can lead to severe neurological diseases.
Preventing Mosquito Bites:
To protect yourself from mosquito bites and reduce the risk of West Nile virus exposure, we recommend the following precautions:
Use Mosquito Repellent: Apply an EPA-registered mosquito repellent on exposed skin and clothing. Follow the product's instructions carefully.
Wear Protective Clothing: When outdoors, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and shoes to minimize exposed skin.
Avoid Peak Mosquito Activity: Mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk, so try to limit outdoor activities during these times.
Eliminate Mosquito Breeding Sites: Remove or empty any standing water around your home or workplace, as it can serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. This includes containers, gutters, and bird baths.
Screen Windows and Doors: Ensure that windows and doors have tight-fitting screens to keep mosquitoes out of indoor spaces.
Symptoms and Medical Care:
If you experience symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, or a rash after potential exposure to mosquito bites, it's essential to seek medical attention promptly. While most cases are mild, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial.
Stay Informed:
We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary.
