Patuxent Research Refuge provides hunters with disabilities multiple opportunities to hunt including special lottery hunts and designated areas to drive in deeper in the woods.
See the hunting guidelines for specific requirements and rules for disabled hunters.
Hunters with disabilities are required to provide written verification of disability at the time of entry into the lottery hunts. See Patuxent Research Refuge Disability Certification Form (pdf).
To hunt from vehicles, deer hunters must posses a Maryland DNR issued “Universal Disability Pass." https://dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/pages/udpfaq.aspx
Deer hunters with documented disabilities (Section I.D) may hunt from their vehicles in the following locations.
Any road on North Tract except Wildlife Way and Bald Eagle Drive. (In other words, gravel and dirt roads only.)
Designated North Tract drive-in locations marked with “disabled hunter” signs on a first-come, first-serve basis. These sites allow disabled hunters to drive deeper into the woods. See entrances and GPS coordinates below. They are also marked on the North Tract maps, see Hunting Maps.
Additional accommodations may be made for hunters with disabilities in the following locations: North Tract, South Tract, and Central Tract and MR Lottery Hunts, and other areas approved by the Refuge Manager/Refuge Law Enforcement. Disabled hunters are required to request accommodations at least 24 hours prior to checking in at the HCS.
Vehicle must be stopped, in park, and the keys out of the ignition prior to loading and firing any method of harvest.
