Crossing the midline is the ability to move one side of the body into the space of the other, going across the invisible vertical line in the center of the body. This ability is generally mastered by the age of 3 or 4 years old. It helps build the pathways of the brain and is an important prerequisite for appropriate development in various motor and cognitive areas. Children who have difficulty with this skill may also struggle with activities such as reading, writing, self-care, participating in sports, and completing other tasks that require the integration of both sides of the body such as cutting with scissors.
