This week, we will be exploring imaginative texts. We are examining key text features using the story The Unhappy Dragon, with a focus on reading fluently and smoothly while paying close attention to punctuation (such as quotation marks and exclamation marks) using our best “reader’s voice.” We will also read Willy the Wimp, where we are practising to make predictions and are unpacking interesting vocabulary.
This week, students will begin to write their own narratives. Inspired by the text features explored in our reading, they will develop their own characters, settings, and problems with solutions. Students are focusing to use interesting vocabulary and hunt for nouns, which has been our grammar focus. They have shared their work in the Author’s Chair, using feedback from their peers to make edits and improvements.
In Maths, we are revising place value concepts for two-digit and three-digit numbers. Students are enjoying creating their names using MAB (tens and ones) and recording the value of each letter in place value form, numerical form, and expanded form. It was wonderful to see students challenge each other by adding their totals, with some even creating three-digit numbers! We also reviewed teen numbers and practised expressing numbers in word form.
In spelling this week, students will be focusing on the digraphs: ai/ay. We will also be focusing on the tricky word: until. We have been completing assessments with students to determine their point of need in their spelling skills - we are so proud of how much they have retained from the Year 1 Initalit program!
At home, you can support your child by doing the following activities:
Child writes the word, saying each sound as he/she writes.
Draw child’s attention to the target phonic pattern.
Help child choose the correct spelling pattern if there are options.
We will also be focusing on the word until.
At home, you can support your child by doing the following activities:
Child writes the word several times, saying each letter name as he/she writes.
Child writes a sentence using the target word.
In our grammar lesson, we will be focusing on what a noun is, and explore nouns in a text.
** Differentiated learning will be present in each class to cater for all students individual learning requirements.
In Wellbeing, we kicked off the year with our Friendology program! Throughout the year, Friendology will assist our students to build strong, healthy friendships and a positive sense of self.
This week, we discussed that friendships have ups and downs and learnt about the Friendology 101 Guidelines, including kindness, honesty, bravery, openness to learning, and having fun.
