STORY SUMMARY

_______________________________________

Shaun is a 6-year-old first-grader with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). His world is playtime, cartoons, dancing and a dose of Vyvanse mixed in his chocolate pudding every morning to treat his ADHD. His 9-year-old sister, McKenna, is his guide and accomplice.

From extracurricular activities to what to pack for lunch, Shaun is given the independence to choose how to live his life in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. Inspired by McKenna, who has taken ballet lessons since she was three, Shaun recently started taking lessons himself. “Did you have fun?” his mother Samantha asks him after his lesson. “You don’t have to keep doing it if it stops being fun.” They juggle a complicated work schedule: David works nights and Samantha works days, but they make sure Shaun doesn’t miss out on any experience. They guide him through life as he begins to understand his place in the world.

Shaun, 6, wakes up at 5:45 a.m. and eats chocolate pudding mixed with his daily dose of Vyvanse, the medication he uses to treat his Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, in Excelsior Springs, Mo.

Shaun and his sister McKenna, 9, are dropped off at a school program for working parents.

Shaun struggles putting on his dance uniform shirt by the window in his bedroom as he gets ready for his jazz class. Shaun’s parents, Samantha and David, allow Shaun to be independent by letting him do everyday tasks on his own.

Shaun and his dad, David, share a tender moment before Shaun starts his dance class in Miss Tanya Duncan’s studio.

Shaun attends Miss Tanya Duncan’s jazz and tap class, his parents encourage him to try activities outside of school. “Did you have fun?” his mother Samantha asks him after his lesson “You don’t have to keep doing it if it stops being fun”.

Shaun and his older sister McKenna arrive early to McKenna’s soccer practice at Paul Craig Park to get a chance to play together.

Shaun's dad inspects his mouth to ensure the bleeding has stopped when he lost a tooth.

Tired from a long day at school, Shaun lies on a couch at home to get some rest before watching television with his sister McKenna.

Shaun, his sister McKenna, and his mom Samantha brush their teeth together in front of the bathroom mirror in their home.

Shaun picks Space Cows for his mom to read him at bedtime. Bedtime stories are a ritual he and his mom share every night in Shaun’s bedroom before going to sleep for the night.

Samantha, Shaun’s mom, reading Space Cows. She sometimes gives him a melatonin gummy if he is having a hard time settling down before bed. Samantha has the names of Shaun and McKenna tattooed on her forearms.
