MARY ENCOUNTERS 7 IMPORTANT PERSONS
MARY ENCOUNTERS 7 IMPORTANT PERSONS
The Blessed Mother encountered 7 important persons that shaped her Spiritual Experience and Mission in the Church. She met the following persons:
1) Joseph- Mary encountered Joseph before the angel appeared to her and announced that she will be the Mother of Jesus, the Son of the Most High God. In Joseph, Mary experienced a responsible father, a humble, a quiet, and faithful husband. The fidelity, trust, and courage of Joseph would be helpful for her to bring the Child Jesus into a family together. Pope Francis describes him as "a lowly carpenter" (cf. Mt 13:55), betrothed to Mary (cf. Mt 1:18; Lk 1:27). He was a “just man” (Mt 1:19), ever ready to carry out God’s will as revealed to him in the Law (cf. Lk 2:22.27.39) and through four dreams (cf. Mt 1:20; 2:13.19.22). (Patris Corde)
2) Angel- Mary encountered the angel Gabriel during the mystery of the annunciation. The dialogue that she had with the angel was just the affirmation of a previous dialogue she had with God. Mary asked questions directly to the angel in a very confident way though she was deeply troubled at that time. To dialogue with the angel showed her customary dialogue with God. She was a woman of prayer and a woman of dialogue with God.
3) Elizabeth- The visitation event made Mary experience the objective truth of the words of the angel to her. Faith corresponds to action as action is linked to faith. Mary believed in the words of the angel and immediately proceeded to Judah to assist her cousin Elizabeth. She stayed there for three months until Elizabeth bore the child. Mary experienced the sacrifice of traveling from Nazareth to Judah and offered her service for Elizabeth. Her spiritual experience constituted service and sacrifice.
4) Shepherds and Magi- Mary showed hospitality to the visitors who came to see the Child Jesus. Both shepherds and Magi followed the signs given them concerning the Child. The shepherds followed the angels while the Magi followed the Star. The welcome she showed to the visitors manifested the heart of God and for the first time, she saw the face of God through the Child. The only thing she could give to the visitors was the face of God.
5) Simeon and Anna- Simeon was revealed to us as a devout man and Anna as a prophetess who dedicated herself with fasting and prayer. Both were holy persons. Mary encountered holy persons who were directly linked to the Temple. This foreshadows that Jesus, her Child, will also be linked with the Temple history. Mary's spiritual experiences were shaped by the elements of a future missionary event-which is the inauguration of a new Temple, the Temple of His Body.
6) Waiters- Mary was close to the waiters or the attendants during the wedding at Cana. The waiters or attendants were servants. Mary likewise mentioned to the angel "I am the maidservant of the Lord, let it be done unto me according to your word." (Lk 1:38)
7) John the Beloved Disciple- Mary experienced the joy of a companion as Jesus returns to the Father. Mary's spiritual experience is shaped by the gift of a disciple of Jesus and a companion in faith. Mary is the perfect disciple and a woman of faith. John the Beloved Disciple will keep Mary with him which will foreshadow the Church as a community of disciples.
