The Filipino-Chinese Association in Cagayan de Oro City traces its foundation on June 15, 1951. Fr. Joseph Kuo, SJ was assigned to be the first chaplain. He appointed by His Excellency James T. Hayes, D.D., former Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro. After 9 months of being appointed as chaplain, he passed away. Fr. Stanislaus Shu, SJ was appointed to succeed him and the Filipino-Chinese community was formally inaugurated on May 18, 1952. Later, Fr. Stanislaus Sun, OMI succeeded Fr. Stanislaus Shu, SJ and under his chaplaincy, a St. Joseph chapel was constructed.
On April 30, 1954 as Fr. Stanislaus Sun, OMI was assigned in Manila, the management of the chaplaincy was given back to Fr. Stanislaus Shu, SJ. Although the Filipino-Chinese Community grew and developed pastorally and spiritually, it had suffered its decline for two major reasons: first, the owner of the lot where St. Joseph Chapel was constructed desired to have the place sold; and second, Fr. Stanislaus Shu, SJ was reassigned to another place though that time the Sto. Nino chapel was temporarily used for the gathering of the Filipino-Chinese. Henceforth, the Filipino-Chinese Community in Cagayan de Oro City became inactive.
It was only in 1993, which is after 39 years that the thought reviving the Filipino-Chinese was realized. Fr. Gil Escalante was commissioned to do the task of starting a new Filipino-Chinese community. This desire to revive the Chinese Community in Cagayan de Oro was assisted by the His Excellency Teodoro Buhain, D.D. who was the National Coordinator of the Filipino-Chinese Apostolate in the Philippines that time. At the outset, Fr. Gil Escalante began its renascence with twelve Filipino-Chinese couples to form the core group and gather the Chinese Community. This idea was supported and approved by His Excellency Jesus Tuquib, D.D. who was the Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro that time. On December 8, 1993 the San Lorenzo Filipino-Chinese Community was born with the inaugural mass celebrated by His Excellency Jesus Tuguib, D.D. It was on February 18, 1995 that the spiritual and religious activities were transferred to the Carmelites Monastery Chapel at Seminary Hills because the former place could not contain the influx growing members of the community.
