Rev. William Richards

(1793-1847)

Rev. William Richards (1793-1847) arrived with the 2nd company of ABCFM Missionaries in 1823. He helped to found the Lahaina, Maui mission station. In 1839 he left the mission to serve as a teacher and advisor to the Alii. He taught a seminar on political economy at the request of King Kamehameha III and was instrumental in the development of the 1840 Hawaiian Kingdom Constitution. Richards and Timoteo Haalilio successfully completed a diplomatic mission to seek internation recognition for the Hawaiian Kingdom. in 1843.
