John Papa ʻĪʻī

History Theatre Portrayal

John Papa `Ī`ī

(1800-1870)

was a kahu to royalty and served 4 Hawaiian monarchs. He was one of the first Hawaiians to learn literacy from the ABCFM missionaries. He was a respected keeper of traditions and his historical and cultural knowledge was printed in the Hawaiian language newspapers in the late 1860s. These articles were later collected into Fragments of Hawaiian History, still a major resource for historians and cultural practitioners today.
