King Kaumualii

(c. 1778-1824)

was the last independent ruler of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau and ruled from approximately 1796 until his death in 1824. In 1810 he agreed to remain ruler of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau, but under King Kamehameha thereby uniting the Hawaiian Islands in to a single kingdom and sparing more bloodshed. He learned to read and write before the missionaries came and sent his son Humehume to America to be educated. He was married to Kapule, an early convert to Christianity, and later married Queen Kaʻahumanu. He is buried at Waineʻe Cemetery at Waiola Church in Lahaina with many other aliʻi nui.
