Level 1: Universal or Core
MLSS starts at Level 1 with grade-level standards, data-based decision making, and high-quality instruction in the core curriculum for all students. Differentiation and scaffolding are used to meet individual student needs at Level 1. Ambitious Instruction is designed to assist in scaffolding and acceleration. For resources on differentiation and scaffolding, consult the Ambitious Instruction eBooks (below).

Screen
Within the MLSS framework, a universal screening process is used to determine whether each student is likely to meet, not meet, or exceed academic benchmarks through the analysis of data from multiple measures (CABS, teacher observation, and others). The process begins with all students being evaluated with the universal screener and potentially a diagnostic assessment. The data are used to determine whether additional academic supports (Level 2) are needed. Students are screened multiple times a year to continue to monitor student progress. If there is a student you believe is gifted and talented, contact the Advanced Academic Programs Manager.
Screener/Diagnostic Data-A New Way Of Looking
The MPS/i-Ready Page-All information-go here!
Instead of looking at the student as a Tier 2 or Tier 3 person, we are now looking at the domains of each subject (Reading and Math) and determining which domains are:
Above Grade Level
At Grade Level
Near Grade Level
1 Grade Level Behind
2 or More Grade Levels Behind
Within Reading or Math, several domains might be near or at grade level and one domain showing concern for either Targeted or Intensive Instruction. The Targeted or Intensive Instruction might only be needed for a short period of time because we are now focusing on the specific domain and its discrete essential skills required for the current Core Curriculum.

The Learning Team monitors the implementation of Level 1 instruction. Learning Teams primarily analyze summative, formative, and benchmark data at the school, grade, and classroom levels to monitor student performance over time. They act to ensure growth for all students in academic and behavioral domains through action planning and aligned support of teachers and staff members. Learning Team meeting minutes must be completed during the meeting. For more information, contact your SPC.
