Academic MLSS Overview
Continuous review of student progress within a MLSS system involves a balanced, systematic process of constant inquiry. Multiple measures are used to determine the current skill level of a student or group of students, how students are responding to core curriculum and instruction, and how students are responding to targeted/intensive instruction or additional challenges. This system consists of a continuum of supports (see MLSS Academics Systems Flowchart).
MLSS Implementation at:
Level 1: MLSS starts at Level 1 with high-quality Universal Instruction in the core curriculum for all students, using grade-level standards and instruction best practices.
Level 2: Level 2 is for students who are identified for additional, Targeted Instruction/academic support as a result of the screening process and the use of multiple data points.
Level 3: Students who have received Level 2 Instruction at fidelity and are not responding to the Targeted Instruction may have Level 3 Intensive Instruction layered on top of the Level 2 provision. If a student is referred for an SLD evaluation, then the student must be provided with Level 3 Intensive Instruction.

How Your School Performance Coordinator (SPC) Supports Academic MLSS
The SPC must be invited to attend the Learning Team meetings to support Level 1. They can be invited to your Academic BIT meetings to support Level 2, and Level 3 implementation. You may also invite the SPC for MLSS to your Academic BIT meetings for support. SPCs will ensure rostering for computer-based academic instruction. Additionally, the SPC for MLSS will provide support to ensure that the Level 2 and Level 3 instruction protocols are in place and being monitored with fidelity (minutes per week/progress monitoring).
