MYTHOLOGY Honors 13402 2.5 credits

From ancient times to the present, societies have created epic heroes as a way to keep their culture alive and pass it on to a new generation. In this course, we’ll examine a variety of mythologies from around the world and different periods of history, and discover the similarities in characters that Joseph Campbell called “The Hero With a Thousand Faces.” Students will read both familiar and unfamiliar stories in new ways, and unearth the underlying meanings of origin stories, hero adventures, and visions of the end of days. Anchor texts include Gilgamesh, Beowulf, and The Perfect Nine. Find out why characters as diverse as Harry Potter, Dorothy Gale, and Luke Skywalker are related, and how you can use even the tales of an ancient society in your everyday lives. Continued skill development in composition, speaking, vocabulary, language, and literary and non-fiction studies are the essential components of this course.
